Fire hits cattle carrier with 2,600 head of livestock at São Sebastião Port

A fire broke out aboard a vessel carrying about 2,600 head of cattle docked at the Port of São Sebastião on the coast of São Paulo state. Despite the blaze, all animals were safely evacuated and no injuries or losses were reported during the operation.

Emergency teams responded quickly to contain the fire and secure the livestock on board. Shortly after the flames were detected, emergency response protocols from both the vessel and the port terminal were activated.

Previous training and simulation drills conducted at the Port of São Sebastião helped ensure coordinated action between the ship’s crew and port personnel. Within minutes, the cattle were removed in an organized operation using ramps and containment areas located away from the most intense part of the fire.

The Port of São Sebastião is one of the main export terminals for agricultural products in São Paulo state and has infrastructure designed to handle both live cargo and bulk shipments. Before loading, accredited veterinarians inspect the cattle to verify their health and suitability for transport, reducing the risk of accidents or severe stress during the voyage.

Ships designed for livestock transport must also be equipped with firefighting systems, including high-pressure hydrants, specialized hoses and emergency generators. These systems are inspected by maritime authorities, which conduct regular checks to ensure compliance with national and international safety regulations.

Following the incident, port and maritime authorities are expected to open an investigation to determine the cause of the fire and assess whether any safety procedures were breached. Maintenance records and internal communications from the vessel may help identify the origin of the blaze and whether additional safety protocols should be implemented.
