Hapag-Lloyd shares rose 3.6% to €136.30 on Xetra after the company announced its second upward revision to full-year 2026 earnings guidance on the evening of Sept. 28.
The carrier raised its group EBITDA forecast to a range of $3.9 billion to $4.4 billion, a substantial increase from its previous projection of $2.7 billion to $3.7 billion. It also lifted its group EBIT guidance to between $1.25 billion and $1.75 billion, up from the previous range of $100 million to $1.1 billion. Management attributed the significant improvement in Hapag-Lloyd earnings guidance to persistently strong market demand and favorable conditions in spot freight rates.
Hapag-Lloyd Earnings Guidance Draws Analyst Attention
On the analyst side, Barclays acknowledged the improved outlook by raising its price target for Hapag-Lloyd shares to €105, while maintaining its Underweight rating. The target remains well below the stock’s current trading level. Separately, Hapag-Lloyd confirmed the first eastbound and westbound sailings of its SE1 service through the Red Sea and the Suez Canal under the Gemini Cooperation with Maersk — a development that signals an important step toward the normalization of routes through one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors.
The broader German market provided a relatively neutral backdrop, with European investors expecting a subdued session and the DAX trading without any significant directional momentum. The Hapag-Lloyd earnings guidance upgrade was therefore the main driver of the move, with the carrier’s shares significantly outperforming the index. Other shipping stocks, including A.P. Møller–Mærsk, were also monitored for correlated moves given their shared exposure to global container freight market dynamics.
Taken together, a significantly stronger earnings outlook — the second upgrade of its kind this fiscal year — combined with early signs of Red Sea route normalization and a stable macroeconomic backdrop created the conditions for the sharp rise in Hapag-Lloyd shares. While Barclays’ continued caution and the company’s own warning about freight-rate volatility and geopolitical risks tempered some of the enthusiasm, the revised guidance was strong enough to push the stock toward the upper end of its intraday range of €132.00 to €138.60.
