Last week, the Federal Court of Itajaí ordered the Port of Itajaí to pay compensation worth R$6.595m to 1,219 artisanal fishermen and five businesses as a result of the damage caused by deepening of the port’s channel in 2011. Each fisherman will receive R$5,000 and each company R$100,000. The workers and organisations are from the coast of Northern Santa Catarina, from the municipalities of Itajaí, Navegantes, Balneário Camboriú, and Penha.
The fishermen laid charges against Itajaí for loss of fishing activity due to the port’s action to deepen the channel from 11m to 14m in 2011. The dredging operation allegedly altered the river bed, compromising the livelihood of the families until the ecosystem of the region returned to normal.
