Japan resumes poultry imports from Brazil’s Espirito Santo

Japan has officially granted authorization for resuming poultry imports from Brazil’s Espírito Santo, effective last Thursday (08/10). A reliable source has conveyed this information to Brazilian authorities.
The halt in sales was enforced on June 28 due to a case of highly pathogenic avian flu in a domesticated bird in the city of Serra. This embargo persisted for over 40 days.
Per Japan’s protocol, Brazil is required to wait a 28-day period following the identification of the disease before submitting a report detailing the outbreak’s status to the Japanese health authorities. Only then, depending on the assessment of such authorities, trade may be reinstituted.
The Ministry of Agriculture aims to streamline this protocol, enabling the automatic reopening of international transactions after the designated waiting period. However, exports from the State of Santa Catarina, suspended 24 days ago on July 17, remain suspended.
During a diplomatic mission to Japan in July, Minister of Agriculture Carlos Fávaro and his Japanese counterparts agreed to modify the protocol. This alteration shifts the categorization of such poultry product restrictions from a state-level matter to a city-wide concern. Notably, Santa Catarina stands as the second-largest chicken exporter in Brazil.
