Maersk calls attention to rising freight prices due to Shanghai lockdown

Maersk said the restrictions aimed at fighting Covid-19 in Shanghai will seriously harm road transportation services and lead to rising freight prices.

The Chinese coastal city, home to some of the world’s busiest ports and airports, began a lockdown on half of its territory on Monday and intends to do the same for the other half for four days starting from Friday.

“Approximately 30% of all inbound and outbound road transport from Shanghai will be severely impacted by the full lockdown imposed on Shanghai’s Pudong and Puxi areas until April 5,” said Maersk, the second-largest container operator in the world, to its customers on Monday.

The company added that warehouses in Shanghai are closed until Friday.

“Thus, lead delivery times will increase and so will transportation costs, such as a fee for alternative routes and road freight.”
