Maersk suspends empty container returns in Gulf markets as Hormuz disruption risks mount

Maersk has temporarily suspended empty container returns at regular locations for import shipments in several Gulf markets, citing operational and navigational risks linked to the evolving situation in and around the Strait of Hormuz.
The measure applies until further notice to imports into the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait, Iraq, Oman’s Duqm and Saudi Arabia’s eastern ports of Dammam and Jubail, the shipping company said.
Under the temporary arrangement, empty containers from those markets must instead be returned only to designated depots in Salalah and Sohar in Oman, and Jeddah in Saudi Arabia.
The move reflects growing concern over vessel safety and port operations in one of the world’s most strategically important shipping corridors. The Strait of Hormuz is a critical route for trade flows linking the Gulf to global markets, and disruptions there can quickly affect regional logistics and container movements.
Maersk said detention and demurrage charges at the designated return points would be subject to local tariffs and applicable laws. In cases where cross-border returns to those locations are not legally permitted or are blocked by authorities, customers have been asked to contact the company to arrange an interim solution.
The carrier said the measures could change as safety and operating conditions develop further.
