Meat exports through the Port of Paranaguá increased by approximately 13%. In 2022, the Paraná-based terminal handled 2,970,105 tonnes of chicken meat, beef, and pork. There were 2,620,876 tonnes in 2021. The increase in fish shipments was even more pronounced, rising 126% from 2,085 tonnes in 2021 to 4,720 tonnes last year.

The largest volume shipped corresponds precisely to chicken meat: 80% of all meat exports through the Port of Paranaguá. In 2022, 2,378,360 tonnes of poultry meat were exported by Paraná. In the previous year, the volume had been 2,276,168 tonnes, an increase of approximately 4.5%.

“The Port of Paranaguá is the main outlet for Brazilian chicken to the international market,” says the director-president of Portos do Paraná, Luiz Fernando Garcia. “That is essentially because we are strategically located in the main producer of poultry meat, the State of Paraná.”

STRUCTURE – Meat cargoes are transported in containers. The company TCP, which manages the container terminal at the Port of Paranaguá, has the largest cold chain structure to serve the frozen and refrigerated market in Latin America, with 3,624 outlets to plug reefer containers.

In addition, this is the only terminal that fulfills this niche in Brazil’s south, with rail operations stretching into the port’s primary zone. “And the railroad serves a lot of chicken exporters, mainly from the westernmost regions of the state,” says Garcia.

RAILWAY – Container movement along the rails has also increased. In 2021, the ratio was 91% road transport to 9% rail. Last year, it grew to 86% by road and 14% by rail.

OTHER MEAT – Beef exports rose 113%. In 2021, 221,442 tonnes of bovine meat were shipped through the Port of Paranaguá. Last year, there were 471,943 tonnes. In pork, 119,802 tonnes were exported in 2022, compared to 123,266 tonnes in 2021, down 2.8%.

DESTINATIONS – The main purchasing markets for the chicken shipped from Paranaguá are China, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa. Beef goes mainly to China, the Philippines, and Egypt. Pork is exported in larger volumes to Hong Kong, Vietnam, and Singapore.

Brazilian fishes mostly have the United States as their final destination.
