On the morning of Friday (16), Portos RS carried out an operational drill to assess the efficiency of the new emergency vessels operating at the environmental base of the Port of Rio Grande. The exercise, led by the Emergency Inspection and Control Coordination, part of the Environmental Directorate of the port authority, focused on the response time from the starting point at Porto Novo to strategic locations within the organized port, such as port terminals and the breakwaters.

The vessels in operation are part of Service Contract No. 016/2024, which provides for the implementation, management, operation, and maintenance of the Environmental Emergency Base of the port. The result of the drill showed a 56% reduction in travel time, from 54 minutes in a previous simulation to 23 minutes with the new equipment.

“The vessels provided have significantly increased our response capacity to environmental incidents. This progress is a direct result of the modernization of our operational structure, aligned with the protocols required in our Emergency Plans and Programs,” said Henrique Ilha, Environmental Director of Portos RS.

Originally designed for Petrobras’ Environmental Defense Centers, the naval aluminum vessels feature technical characteristics adapted to emergency scenarios in sensitive areas such as mangroves and estuaries. Highlights include their lightweight structure, which enables agile movements; a shallow draft, allowing operations in shallow waters; and customization options, including a wide deck for equipment and the capacity to accommodate up to eight crew members.

The regular performance of drills is part of Portos RS’s ongoing efforts to update and prepare its emergency base. In addition to training teams, the exercises enable technical assessments of the equipment and adjustments to operational procedures to comply with environmental safety regulations.
