Paraná River dredging slow but uninterrupted

Week 202225

The dredging works conduct in the Paraná River are essential to guarantee navigation in times of low tide, which we have faced recurrently in the last campaigns and, in particular, in the last one, as the problem worsened, said Hugo Pastore, from the Paraguayan Chamber of Producers and Exporters of Cereals and Oilseeds (CAPECO), in communication with Paraguay Fluvial.

Pastore indicated that the dredging is being financed by the Paraná River port sector in partnership with the Argentine-Paraguayan Paraná River Commission (COMIP). Although taking place at a slow pace, these works continue to advance without interruption. According to him, the dredging works are successful and have been underway for several months.

In addition, the executive added that today the water level at the port of Ituzaingó is enough to allow navigation.

Agricultural sector projections

Hugo Pastore commented that the first half of 2022 was marked by a drop in soybean output of approximately 70% of the production potential. But, as activities in the countryside never stop, producers are already in the middle of the so-called safrinha planting season (corn interim harvest), which should slightly increase the pace of production and activities in this first semester.

Hugo Pastore believes the planning works should be delivered in the second semester. In addition, production chains are focused on the distribution of agricultural inputs in preparation for the month of September, which is when 2022/2023 campaign begins.

“There is significant optimism, and the sector needs to have a good agricultural year, as the fall that occurred in the previous period will not be recovered in a single campaign. It may take two or three harvests to recover,” he concluded.
