The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reported on Wednesday, Jan 4, that the health and sanitary authorities of Peru approved in the final week of 2022 the entry of pork produced in Brazil for the first time.

According to the industry group, this was the last step to start selling pork to Peru, which had agreed to an International Health Certificate (CSI) with Brazil in 2021.

“The export authorization will be effective after each single producing unit is assessed and qualified. In this case, the unit is located in Acre (a state bordering Peru). Its qualification was concluded after a long negotiation process between the two countries,” the association said in a statement.

ABPA did not inform the name of the approved companies.

According to the president of the ABPA, Ricardo Santin, the opening of the Peruvian market “is an important step towards the internationalization of Brazil’s northern region in the supply of pork. We expect that products will begin to flow in the first half of 2023, and Brazil should act in a complementary manner and respect local production,” he said.
