On the morning of the 14th, the P-32 platform docked at the Rio Grande Port Shipyard for dismantling. The platform had been in Rio Grande waters since the beginning of the past week, awaiting ideal weather conditions for the vessel, weighing over 40,000 tons, to maneuver safely to the shipyard.
The arrival of the platform in the municipality is mobilizing about 70 professionals from the Rio Grande Port, and it is expected that the presence of the P-32 will generate over 200 jobs. The plan is for the P-32 to remain at the Rio Grande Shipyard for a year, where it will undergo Brazil’s first sustainable decommissioning process.
During the dismantling, actions will be taken to minimize waste generation, prevent impacts on biodiversity, and reuse equipment. Metallic waste will be used as raw material for steel production at Gerdau mills in Charqueadas and Sapucaia do Sul.
Additionally, only certified shipyards with dry docks will be used for the final disposal of the waste resulting from the dismantling process.
The P-32 platform was acquired at auction by the Gerdau company, which has contracted Ecovix, the owner of the shipyard, for the dismantling process.
