The Ponta do Félix port, located in Antonina on the coast of Paraná, is expected to move 2.5 million tonnes of cargo in 2023, 65% more than last year. The increase is accompanied by operational diversification and infrastructure investments.

At the beginning of the year, the port invested in new maritime fenders, which provide more security during the berthing of ships. The fenders serve to cushion the impact resulting from the encounter between a vessel and the mooring structure, reducing the risk of damage.

They are typically made of high-quality rubber — depending on the purpose — and are installed with safety chains and secured to the quay wall by galvanized or stainless steel anchors.

“The new improvements should attract more ships to Antonina because of the increase in operational security,” says the president of the port Gilberto Birkhan. Furthermore, he explains that the fender model installed at Ponta do Félix is of high quality, reducing the friction generated between the vessel and the plate.

Expansion

Over the coming months, the Ponta do Félix port will also see new warehouses, which will gradually allow an 85% increase in storage capacity from 280 thousand tonnes to 520 thousand tonnes.

“The increase in static capacity opens up markets in new segments. We expect, for example, the cabotage of wheat and the import of ash, a sodium-based product used by the industry for food production,” emphasized Birkhan.

The additional space will also benefit the fertilizer market. According to Portos do Paraná port authority data, nearly 10 million tonnes of inputs were imported through the ports of Paranaguá and Antonina in 2022. The volume represents 27.5% of all fertilizer received by the country. “Parana’s ports are Brazil’s main ports of entry for fertilizers. By increasing the storage space for the product, we are meeting a demand from our customers,” Birkhan concludes.
