The superintendent of the Port of Itajaí, João Paulo Tavares Bastos, is in Brasília this Wednesday, the 11th, to address the inclusion of the terminal in the Capricorn Bioceanic Route. This new logistics corridor will connect China to Mercosur and Europe, passing through several South American countries.
“I took part in a meeting with the technical team from the Ministry of Planning, during which the inclusion of Itajaí in the route was confirmed. It is considered a strategic aspect of Brazil’s foreign trade. This means more revenue, tax collection, and jobs for Itajaí,” said the superintendent.
Below is a historical overview of cargo throughput from Itajaí Port. The chart was prepared using DataLiner data:

The route, which is expected to be completed by 2026 and begin operations in 2027, promises key benefits, including a reduction of up to 40% in logistics costs and a decrease of approximately two weeks in maritime transport time. The measure should also enhance the competitiveness of products from southern and central-western Brazil, facilitating trade with countries in Asia, Europe, and Mercosur itself.
One of the most significant gains for the Port of Itajaí is the anticipated growth in South American exports to Europe, especially with the potential signing of a free trade agreement with the European Union. With this, Itajaí stands out as one of the terminals with the greatest potential to handle this new international trade flow.
In addition to technical discussions, João Paulo Bastos coordinated with the Ministry of Planning to organize an event in Santa Catarina, presenting to the public the impacts and potential of the Bioceanic Route and reinforcing the state’s logistical leadership in the new foreign trade landscape.
