The Port of Itapoá has begun discussions on new expansion phases to support the growth of container throughput in the state of Santa Catarina. Since the start of operations, the terminal has accumulated R$ 3 billion in investments and, in 2025, topped the state ranking by handling 1.45 million TEUs, consolidating its position as the third-largest container port in Brazil.
Datamar data reveals that the leading commodities exported in 2025 were poultry (24% of the total), pork (7%), and chemical wood pulp (soda or sulfate) at 7%. The table below provides a detailed breakdown of the primary outbound international shipments, alongside a year-over-year (YoY) comparison with 2024:

According to the commercial and customer experience director, Felipe Kaufmann, R$ 500 million is being invested in Phase 4 of the expansion alone, covering new equipment, yard expansion, and accessibility improvements. This phase also includes enlarging the operational area and completing the dredging of the access channel to Babitonga Bay, which is currently 37.4% complete. Once the works are finalized, the terminal will be able to handle vessels of up to 366 meters in length, with capacity for up to 14,000 TEUs.
Discussions on additional phases are taking place alongside progress on infrastructure projects considered strategic for cargo flows. In early February, the state government authorized the publication of the tender notice for the duplication of highway SC-416, with an estimated investment of R$ 222 million.
Approximately 25 kilometers long, SC-416 connects SC-417 to the municipal José Alves road, passing through Garuva and linking BR-101 to the port area of Itapoá. The duplication is expected to increase traffic capacity, improve logistics flows, and strengthen the competitiveness of the Babitonga Bay region as a port hub.
