Port of Paranaguá invests R$81 million in new power substation

The Port of Paranaguá said on Thursday (25) it is investing R$81.3 million in a new power substation designed to support the port’s expansion plans for the next three decades.

The project will have 60 MW of installed capacity and a 138 kV connection. The ETR consortium has two years to complete the works.

The substation’s capacity is equivalent to the electricity consumption of roughly 30,000 to 60,000 homes, based on average monthly use of 150 to 250 kWh.

“The substation was planned to support the port for the next 30 years, including future expansions such as the T-shaped and F-shaped piers,” said Luiz Fernando Garcia, CEO of Portos do Paraná.

The port authority said the project’s main advantage is that it will connect directly to Copel’s main substation, eliminating the need to receive power through intermediate step-down substations.

The project will require upgrades to the local power grid, including the installation of new utility poles along about four kilometers of urban roads.
