The Port of São Sebastião reached a score of 96.31 on the Environmental Performance Index (IDA) in 2024, surpassing the 92.77 points recorded the previous year. The index, developed by Brazil’s National Waterway Transport Agency (ANTAQ), evaluates the quality of environmental management in the country’s public ports. Over the past year, the port invested approximately BRL 3.5 million in environmental initiatives.
The higher score reflects a series of improvements implemented throughout the year. Highlights include the strengthening of environmental training programs for staff, which enhanced awareness and preparedness, as well as the adoption of strict control and monitoring practices for operational activities, contributing directly to a reduction in accidents and environmental incidents.
Additionally, public health initiatives were expanded, including vector control programs, improvements in port sanitation conditions, and enhanced waste disposal practices. Investments were also made in environmental monitoring systems and the modernization of management processes, ensuring more efficient control of impact.
The IDA considers criteria such as compliance with environmental regulations, waste management, resource efficiency, environmental conservation, and socio-environmental responsibility.
“This achievement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to increasingly responsible and sustainable practices. The score we reached is the result of our entire team’s collective effort, working daily to meet the highest environmental standards,” said Ernesto Sampaio, CEO of the Port of São Sebastião. “Improving on the 2023 result is a source of great pride, especially given the strictness of ANTAQ’s evaluation process. Simply maintaining last year’s score would have been significant, and surpassing it reinforces our commitment to continuous improvement,” he added.
Additionally, in 2024, the Port of São Sebastião, situated on the São Paulo coast, received the 7th ANTAQ Award in the Environmental Development category, acknowledging progress in waste management, energy efficiency, and natural resource conservation. The award assesses public ports across Brazil based on improvements in the Environmental Performance Index, which measures performance in environmental issues and sustainable development.
