Porto Itapoá opens new truck gate, raises daily capacity to 3,000 vehicles

Porto Itapoá, in Santa Catarina, has opened a new gate dedicated exclusively to incoming trucks, increasing its potential daily handling capacity from an average of around 2,000 truck movements to as many as 3,000.

The new gate, which began operating last week, has eight lanes reserved exclusively for trucks entering the terminal. The previous structure, which had alternated between inbound and outbound traffic, will now be used only by trucks leaving the terminal.

Separating the two traffic flows has allowed the terminal to reorganize vehicle circulation and expand its operating capacity.

According to Porto Itapoá CEO Ricardo Arten, the change will provide greater predictability, speed and safety.

“The new gate expands our operating capacity. That does not necessarily mean we will use all of that capacity immediately. Utilization of the new structure will increase gradually as demand grows and operations develop,” Arten said.

The gate will also be equipped with automatic vehicle and driver recognition systems. The technology is expected to speed up access procedures while strengthening security controls for trucks, cargo and workers.

“We are investing in infrastructure, technology and operational efficiency to keep pace with growing demand while maintaining high standards of safety and performance,” Arten said.

R$500 million expansion underway

The new access point is part of the ongoing Porto Itapoá expansion, known as Phase 4, which calls for R$500 million in investment.

The project includes an additional 120,000 square meters of container yard, the acquisition of high-tech equipment and measures aimed at improving both operational efficiency and sustainability.

Planned investments include 12 new rubber-tired gantry cranes, or RTGs, featuring hybrid technology and remote operation, as well as nine new terminal tractors.

The new equipment will expand Porto Itapoá’s fleet of electric terminal tractors, which the company says is the largest in Brazil.

Privately operated Porto Itapoá began operations in 2011 and is one of Brazil’s largest container terminals.
