Porto Itapoá closes 2025 with a historic milestone by reaching the handling of 1.5 million TEUs, achieving the target set for the year and consolidating its position among Brazil’s leading port terminals. The volume represents a 25% increase compared to 2024, when the terminal handled 1.2 million TEUs—well above the national industry average, estimated at around 8%.
According to the ranking by the National Waterway Transportation Agency (Antaq), Porto Itapoá ranks third among the largest ports in the country and maintains its leadership in the state of Santa Catarina. The terminal also stands out as the fastest-growing among the five largest ports in Brazil for four consecutive years.
For Porto Itapoá’s CEO, Ricardo Arten, the result reflects a consistent strategy based on operational efficiency, continuous investment, and innovation. “Reaching 1.5 million TEUs confirms a well-planned and well-executed effort focused on productivity, safety, and sustainability. We have grown well above the national average because we invest in a structured way and with a long-term vision,” he says.
This growth is expected to intensify in the coming years with the fourth phase of Porto Itapoá’s expansion, which foresees investments totaling R$500 million. The project includes the expansion of 120,000 square meters of yard area, with 60,000 m² to be delivered in the first quarter of 2026 and another 60,000 m² to be completed by the end of the same year, significantly increasing the terminal’s operational capacity.
The quay equipment fleet will also be strengthened with the arrival of the 8th ship-to-shore crane, scheduled for the period between December 2025 and January 2026. After the first month of operation of the 7th ship-to-shore crane with the consolidated gang, the terminal recorded a 15% increase in vessel operation productivity.
Another relevant advancement is in access infrastructure, with the entry into operation of eight new gates in 2026, which is expected to ensure greater logistical flow and service capacity for customers.
In the fields of innovation and sustainability, Porto Itapoá already operates new Reach Stackers and electric forklifts, in addition to having nine electric Terminal Tractors in operation—the largest fleet of its kind in Brazil. Between December 2025 and January 2026, the terminal will also receive 12 new remotely controlled RTGs, further increasing automation levels and operational efficiency.
According to Ricardo Arten, the investments reinforce Porto Itapoá’s commitment to the future of the Brazilian port sector. “We are preparing the terminal for a new level of throughput, with more technology, lower environmental impact, and even greater operational efficiency. Our goal is to be the largest, safest, and most efficient port terminal in South America,” the CEO concludes.
