Porto Piauí receives first cargo vessel at private-use terminal

Porto Piauí recorded the first cargo vessel call in its history on Monday (29), marking a milestone for the new port complex in Luís Correia, on Brazil’s northeastern coast.

The bulk carrier Konta II berthed at Berth 401, which is dedicated to iron ore unloading. The operation involved five companies working across maritime support, vessel agency services, ship and tug operations, and cargo measurement. The Brazilian Navy closely monitored the planning and execution of the maneuver.

The vessel entered Porto Piauí’s navigation channel at around 4 p.m. Sailing at speeds between 3 and 5 knots, it completed the maneuver in the turning basin and berthed at around 5 p.m.

The Konta II is a bulk carrier measuring 109 meters in length and 26.8 meters in width. It can carry about 9,000 tonnes of iron ore per voyage. After loading, the cargo will be transferred to an oceangoing vessel.

Piauí Governor Rafael Fonteles followed the operation from a helicopter.

“For the first time, a large vessel has arrived at Porto Piauí, in Luís Correia. This operation is a milestone for our state’s logistics infrastructure and opens a new phase for the economic development of Piauí’s coastline. We already have terminals under development here, including the iron ore terminal. This terminal will make it possible to load more than 100,000 tonnes onto a single vessel,” Fonteles said.

Raimundo Dias, president of Porto Piauí, said the first berthing marks the beginning of a new chapter for the state.

“What begins today is the result of years of work by dozens of professionals who make up Companhia Porto Piauí. Today, we have made real what so many people insisted was impossible,” Dias said.
