Strong winds recorded on the coast of Santa Catarina last Wednesday (20th) dragged a ship at the Port of Imbituba, in the south of the state, causing it to run aground.

Footage filmed from Praia do Porto shows the vessel, loaded with containers, rocking amid strong waves and winds, while tugboats attempted to support the ship.

According to the Port of Imbituba’s press office, “the ship had difficulty accessing the dock while attempting to berth due to strong winds. The situation has since been brought under control, and the vessel returned to anchorage (anchored outside the port) where it is waiting for stable conditions to attempt another berthing maneuver.”

The press office also stated that the Port Authority, tugboats, pilotage service, and the Brazilian Navy will investigate the cause of the incident. “They will determine what caused the vessel to veer off the berthing route, whether the ship made contact with the seabed, and if the wind was the main factor—this will all be investigated,” the Port of Imbituba stated.

Efforts to free the vessel continued into the night with the support of several tugboats. No injuries were reported.
