Slow orange juice exports make processors cautious about fruit purchases

Initial expectations among exporters for Brazil’s 2025/26 orange juice export season were positive, particularly given the exemption of the U.S. surcharge on Brazilian imports and the recovery of orange production in São Paulo state. However, researchers from the Center for Advanced Studies on Applied Economics (Cepea) indicate that limited demand from Europe has kept orange juice exports below expectations in the early months of the harvest (July to October).

In this scenario, São Paulo’s processing industries surveyed by Cepea have adopted an extremely cautious stance on new fruit purchases. Their strategy has been to temporarily halt new contract signings, maintaining only previously established agreements, and making new acquisitions exclusively on the spot market, where buyers have been offering lower prices.

For citrus growers, the outlook is concerning. According to Cepea researchers, the lower prices being offered could compromise the financial viability of many orchards, especially if this price level persists until the end of the season.
