Strong winds top 100 km/h on São Paulo coast, closing Port of Santos

Wind gusts exceeded 100 km/h in Baixada Santista, the coastal region of São Paulo state that includes Santos, early on Wednesday afternoon, July 29.

According to São Paulo’s Civil Defense agency, the city of Itanhaém recorded gusts of 103 km/h. The access channel to the Port of Santos was also closed because of the strong winds.

As weather conditions worsened, authorities sent an emergency alert to smartphones in the region with the following message from Civil Defense: “Strong wind gusts are expected along the São Paulo coast over the next few hours. Seek shelter and avoid open areas. Do not remain under trees or utility poles.”

Regarding port operations, the São Paulo Port Captaincy, the local maritime authority, said the Port of Santos was declared unsafe for navigation starting at 12:45 p.m. after weather conditions deteriorated and winds exceeded 30 knots, equivalent to about 56 km/h.

In practice, the measure means the port was temporarily closed to vessel traffic.
