Studies begin for São Paulo rail bypass to separate freight and passenger trains

Brazil’s Ministry of Transport signed a memorandum of understanding on Monday (29) to begin studies and project planning for the São Paulo Ferroanel, a rail bypass designed to separate freight and passenger train traffic in the São Paulo metropolitan area.

Under the agreement, rail operator MRS will be responsible for the technical studies. The work will include defining the route, assessing operating capacity, evaluating urban and environmental impacts, surveying land ownership, setting an implementation schedule and estimating required investments and expected benefits.

The project calls for the construction of a roughly 53-kilometer rail loop between Itaquaquecetuba and the Perus district in the city of São Paulo.

The studies are expected to be completed within 12 months after MRS and the Ministry of Transport define the technical assumptions for the project. The memorandum is non-binding and does not create contractual obligations.

In a statement, Transport Minister George Santoro said the agreement marks the start of studies that will identify the best way to implement the Ferroanel. He said the goal is to ensure the project moves forward with safety, planning and efficiency.
