Super Terminais and the State Government of Amazonas signed a contract on July 2 for the construction of the first natural gas plant dedicated to port operations in Northern Brazil. The R$ 30 million investment was announced at a press conference held at the company’s pier in Manaus (AM), solidifying a strategic partnership with the state government to boost large-scale sustainable port operations.

“This project began two years ago through a partnership with Cigás and the State Government, with whom we have always collaborated on all initiatives. We hope this pioneering effort sets an example for all ports, encouraging everyone to embrace the use of renewable energy. Super Terminais aims to stay ahead, always bringing innovation,” said Marcello di Gregorio, director of Super Terminais.

The plant will be installed in the SUFRAMA (Manaus Free Trade Zone Authority) area, reinforcing the Amazonas government’s commitment to maintaining sustainability as a priority in the economic and environmental development agenda.

In addition to enabling the direct supply of natural gas to the port, underground pipelines will be installed to connect the plant to the port facilities. This system will ensure the continuous supply of equipment, such as the three Konecranes — the world’s first electric cranes — operating at Super Terminais. The new model will replace diesel truck transport, also reducing truck traffic and logistical impact in the region.

With this initiative, Super Terminais will eliminate approximately 17,000 tons of CO₂ emissions per year from its operations alone, making a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

The environmental benefits extend beyond eliminating diesel from crane operations: emission reductions will also result from fuel logistics, as it will eliminate the need to transport diesel by truck, further reducing the carbon footprint.

“All the progress we’ve made regarding natural gas has been very positive in recent years. Although it is a fossil-based fuel, natural gas is considered the safest energy source in this transition process, emitting fewer pollutants than diesel, gasoline, and other fossil fuels. Today, the state of Amazonas is on a different level in terms of natural gas,” stated the governor of Amazonas, Wilson Lima.

According to him, the natural gas plant project at the Super Terminais port is another step toward building a development model that combines innovation, environmental responsibility, and job and income generation.
