Suzano to acquire 10% stake in Imetame Port in Aracruz

Suzano, the world’s largest pulp producer, announced on Monday, August 31, that it has signed an agreement to acquire a 10% stake in the Imetame Port in Aracruz, a port complex under development in Espírito Santo state, southeastern Brazil.

Suzano said its stake in Imetame Logística will be formed through the contribution of land it owns in a strategic location for the project’s development. The company said the transaction will not affect the operational or economic performance of its Aracruz industrial unit, which is located in the same region.

“The participation of Suzano in Imetame Logística will be constituted through the contribution of land owned by the company, strategically located for the development of the project, without affecting the operational or economic performance of the company’s Aracruz Unit, located in the same region,” Suzano said in a material fact notice.

General cargo operations at Imetame’s port are expected to begin in early 2027. The container terminal, being developed through a joint venture with Hanseatic Global Terminals, Hapag-Lloyd’s terminal division, is expected to start operations in mid-2028.

The container terminal is planned with a 17-meter draft and future capacity estimated at 1.2 million TEUs per year.

Suzano sees long-term logistics value

Suzano said the strategy is focused on long-term value creation, combining port logistics expertise with the monetization of its land assets in the region.

Together with Cenibra, Suzano also controls Portocel, the Barra do Riacho Specialized Terminal, which is also located in Aracruz. Portocel is one of Brazil’s main pulp export terminals.

The company said the initiative reinforces its partnership with infrastructure operators and supports the consolidation of the new port as a strategic platform for Brazilian foreign trade.

With a 17-meter depth, the Imetame terminal will be able to receive large vessels, a feature expected to strengthen its logistics competitiveness.

Espírito Santo port investments

Espírito Santo has the fourth-largest port cargo movement in Brazil and is expected to receive R$6.4 billion in investments by 2031 for new terminals and the expansion of existing infrastructure.

The figures come from the Espírito Santo Port Atlas, released this year by the state’s industry federation Findes.

Among the 10 largest cargoes handled at terminals in Espírito Santo, pulp ranks second, with a 7.3% share.

Suzano’s entry into the Imetame Port in Aracruz adds a major cargo owner to one of Espírito Santo’s most closely watched port projects, strengthening the connection between the state’s pulp industry, new container capacity and Brazil’s broader foreign trade infrastructure.
