Tereos sets record with 70,000-tonne VHP sugar shipment via VLI terminal

In July, Tereos carried out the largest shipment of VHP (Very High Polarization) sugar in its history, exporting 70,000 tonnes on a single vessel bound for the Chinese market. The operation took place at the Luiz Antônio Mesquita Integrator Terminal (Tiplam), operated by VLI and situated in the Baixada Santista region, marking a significant milestone in the company’s history.
In July of last year, the companies had already shipped 60,000 tonnes to the Asian market, with Indonesia as the destination. This new, larger volume was made possible by an increase in the terminal’s draft—defined as the distance between the waterline and the bottom of the vessel—which was completed in the first half of this year. As a result, the maximum operating draft at the port terminal was raised from 13.20 meters to 14.10 meters, allowing for greater cargo capacity on vessels operating at the site.
“This new record represents a strategic breakthrough for Tereos, reflecting the ongoing growth of our logistics capacity and the consolidation of our presence in the Asian market, especially in China, one of the world’s largest sugar consumers,” said Gustavo Segantini, Commercial Director at Tereos.
“Anticipating the demands of the 2025/2026 sugar harvest, the increased draft at Tiplam reinforces VLI’s vision of being the most efficient and competitive logistics partner for Brazil’s strategic economic sectors. It offers a high-value alternative across the entire supply chain, generating scale and business gains essential to Brazil’s sugar exporters,” added Marcelo Cardoso, Operations Director for VLI’s Southeast Corridor.
Tereos is already planning additional large-scale shipments for the second half of 2025, reaffirming its commitment to operational excellence and the sustainable expansion of its global exports.
Partnership
In November 2020, VLI and Tereos inaugurated two sugar warehouses, one of which is located at Tiplam and has a capacity of 115,000 tonnes of raw sugar. The other is at TIGU—the Guará Integrator Terminal in São Paulo—also operated by VLI and located near several of Tereos’s industrial units. This logistics complex has a capacity of 160,000 tonnes and handles the volume of sugar that Tereos exports through Tiplam via the Centro-Atlântica Railway. This also represents an environmental gain, as greenhouse gas emissions per tonne transported by rail are just one-sixth of those produced by road freight.
