Itajaí Port Authority to Become a State-Owned Company
Nov, 22, 2024 Posted by Sylvia SchandertWeek 202444
The Itajaí City Council approved, in a single vote and under urgent procedures, a proposal to transform the Itajaí Port Authority—currently a public agency—into a state-owned company linked to the mayor’s office. This change is a legal requirement and has been under discussion in the Legislative since March.
The creation of the state-owned company is one condition for renewing the port delegation agreement with the municipality of Itajaí. The current agreement expires on December 31, but the federal government does not guarantee the continuation of municipal control.
How Itajaí Could Lose the Port to the Federal Government
Behind the scenes, there are discussions about either placing the Port of Itajaí under federal government control or linking its administration to the federal state-owned company that oversees the Port of Santos. Both alternatives are viewed with caution by the port sector, as they would centralize decision-making in Brasília.
The project that turns the Itajaí Port Authority into a public company is awaiting Mayor Volnei Morastoni’s (MDB) approval.
