Brazil’s waterway regulator ANTAQ held the 10th edition of its annual awards ceremony on Tuesday (10) in Brasília, marking a decade of the initiative. This year, 25 winners were selected among companies, institutions and researchers under the central theme “Solutions for Climate Change.”

Responsive Regulation and New Criteria

In this edition, the agency reinforced its concept of responsive regulation — a model aimed at encouraging compliance and innovation through positive incentives rather than strictly punitive measures. According to ANTAQ Director-General Frederico Dias, the awards recognize industry players that anticipate regulatory requirements, particularly in environmental, social and governance (ESG) practices.

The main regulatory innovation this year was the creation of the Waterway Connectivity category. Using data from ANTAQ’s Waterway Statistics Panel, the agency identified inland navigation companies that expanded Brazil’s logistics reach by serving the highest number of municipalities in 2024.

Performance and Innovation Highlights

The port sector — responsible for 95% of Brazil’s exports — saw its environmental efficiency indicators closely monitored. Among large public ports handling more than 5 million tonnes annually, the Port of Suape posted the highest score.

In the large private terminal category (above 5 million tonnes), four facilities tied for top performance under the agency’s criteria: Ferroport, Porto Itapoá, Portonave and Vale’s Ponta da Madeira terminal.

In applied sustainability, the Port of Açu won in the Innovative Initiatives category for a project that reuses dredged sediments in civil construction, aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Authorities in Attendance

The ceremony was attended by Ports and Airports Minister Silvio Costa Filho, as well as representatives from Brazil’s Federal Court of Accounts (TCU), the National Civil Aviation Agency (ANAC) and the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE).
