Ports and Airports Minister Tomé Franca joined President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on Wednesday (27) for events in Amazonas state filled with announcements of investments in shipbuilding infrastructure, river logistics and regional development. During the day, R$875.9 million was announced for the Manaus Moderna Terminal project, with funding from the New PAC infrastructure program. Lula also announced R$2.8 billion disbursed by Petrobras and Transpetro for the construction of barges at the Bertolini Shipyard and for well drilling.
At the Juruá Shipyard, in the Amazonas state capital, Franca presented the Manaus Moderna Terminal project, an undertaking led by the Ministry of Ports and Airports in partnership with the National Department of Transport Infrastructure (Dnit.) The construction contract was signed in March this year, with completion expected in 2029. The new terminal will be able to handle about 3.5 million passengers a year, in addition to essential cargo such as food and medicines. The structure will directly serve 61 riverside municipalities, the city of Manaus and about 4.5 million people in the Amazon.
The project includes the construction of floating docks, movable bridges, passenger and cargo terminals, operating areas, parking facilities, a sewage treatment station, a power substation, and accessibility and safety structures. The works also include improvements around Feira da Banana, an important popular commercial hub in Manaus.
During the presentation, the minister highlighted the strategic importance of the project for integration and development in the Amazon region.
“The Manaus Moderna Port represents a new benchmark for waterway infrastructure in the Amazon. We are talking about an investment of nearly R$900 million to expand the terminal’s operating capacity and provide greater safety, accessibility, comfort and dignity to the millions of passengers who depend on river transport every day. This is a project that strengthens logistics, drives the regional economy and improves the lives of riverside communities,” he said.
Merchant Marine Fund
Earlier, at the Bertolini Shipyard, Lula announced investments by the Petrobras system in the state, including plans to build 18 barges for fuel transport and the resumption of Petrobras investments in production at Urucu, with about R$2.5 billion slated for the drilling of new wells. The initiatives also include measures focused on inland navigation and river logistics.
Lula also highlighted the increase in investments made through the Merchant Marine Fund, or FMM.
“In the seven years before the current government, about R$22 billion was invested in shipbuilding and logistics infrastructure. In the four years of the current administration, investments in the sector totaled R$88 billion. Four times more means more jobs, more vessels and more development for the country. This strengthens the economy and expands opportunities for the population,” he said.
Franca also emphasized the increase in sector investments and the priority given to Brazil’s North region.
“We are experiencing one of the largest infrastructure investment cycles in the country, with strong participation from the Merchant Marine Fund. Strengthening logistics in the Amazon means expanding opportunities, improving cargo and passenger transport, driving economic development in the North region and ensuring greater integration for communities that depend on rivers as their main means of access.”
