Northern Brazil Outpaces National Average in Cargo Throughput Growth — See the Numbers

Ports in Northern Brazil played a key role in boosting cargo throughput across public terminals nationwide. In March 2025, port activity in the region grew nearly 7% compared to the same month last year, according to Brazil’s Ministry of Ports and Airports (MPor).
The standout category was general cargo, which surged by more than 200%, largely driven by soybean exports. Over 2 million tonnes of soybeans were shipped through ports in the region.
In Amapá, port operations rose 47.33% year-on-year in March, led by solid bulk cargo, which accounted for 51.34% of the state’s total throughput. The Port of Santana was the main contributor to this result.
In Pará, cargo throughput increased 2.76%, fueled by a sharp 271.32% rise in general cargo. The Ports of Santarém and Vila do Conde were central to this growth, handling 1.7 million and 1.4 million tonnes, respectively.
A Growing Trend
According to MPor, the figures reflect the strengthening of logistics and port infrastructure in Northern Brazil, which is playing an increasingly critical role in the flow of Brazilian agricultural exports—especially grain harvests.
“These ports are expected to gain even more relevance in the coming years as Brazil’s export volumes grow and the country improves its logistics competitiveness,” the ministry stated.
