Svitzer takes delivery of second tug from Rio Maguari shipyard to expand Brazil fleet
Tugboat and marine services provider Svitzer has taken delivery of the second of three tugs ordered from Brazil’s Estaleiro Rio Maguari shipyard, strengthening the company’s expansion strategy and footprint in the country’s Northeast.
The new vessel, named Svitzer Cassino, is set to operate at the Port of Pecém and is part of Svitzer’s plan to modernize and grow its Brazilian fleet through 2026.
“Serving ever-larger vessels requires technology, precision and highly skilled crews,” said Daniel Reedtz Cohen, managing director of Svitzer Americas. “The arrival of Svitzer Cassino reinforces our long-term commitment to Brazil and demonstrates our confidence in the continued growth of the port sector, ensuring the precision and safety the market demands.”
Designed for high maneuverability and efficiency in port and terminal support operations, the Svitzer Cassino is an Azimuth Stern Drive (ASD) tug, a configuration widely recognized for performance and handling capability. The vessel measures 23 meters in length overall, with an 11-meter beam, and is equipped with azimuth propulsion. It sails under the Brazilian flag, holds ABS classification and features a FiFi-1 firefighting system.
In addition to enhancing operational capacity at Pecém, the delivery underscores support for Brazil’s domestic shipbuilding industry. The tug was built at the Rio Maguari yard in the northern state of Pará, contributing to local job creation, technological development and the strengthening of the country’s maritime supply chain.
With the addition of Svitzer Cassino, the company now operates 24 tugs in Brazil. The vessel forms part of a broader strategy to expand and modernize the fleet in the country by the end of 2026, as Svitzer seeks to position itself for sustained growth in Brazil’s port sector.
