Super Terminais Invests R$650 Million, Prepares for Drought in Amazonas

Super Terminais, a member of the Brazil Logistics Institute (IBL), has invested around R$650 million over the past two years to expand and modernize its operations in Amazonas. The Super Terminais investment in Amazonas is focused on three areas: expanding port infrastructure in Manaus, preparing for periods of severe drought and entering the grain and fertilizer market through Brazil’s Northern Arc logistics corridor.

The announcement comes at a critical time for the region. Drought and wildfires in the Amazon have brought smoke as far as Manaus. At the same time, river levels are falling, already raising concerns across the logistics sector.

“This is an especially challenging time for Amazonas. Drought and wildfires are already affecting people’s daily lives, and deteriorating air quality also requires attention from a public health perspective. In logistics, we know that weather conditions can affect navigation by lowering river levels, reducing visibility and making it harder to move through different stretches of the waterways. This situation reinforces the importance of planning ahead for periods of crisis,” said Marcello Di Gregorio, managing director of Super Terminais.

As river levels fall, large vessels may be unable to reach Manaus. To avoid disrupting supplies to the Manaus Industrial Pole (PIM), the company can move part of its floating infrastructure to Itacoatiara, where containers can be handled temporarily. The plan was already put into practice in 2024.

“At Super Terminais, we are already prepared to replicate the operation carried out in 2024 and transfer part of our floating infrastructure to Itacoatiara. In addition, over the past two years, we have invested around R$650 million in infrastructure, technology and regional expansion. Our commitment is to ensure resilient, safe and efficient logistics and help Amazonas and Brazil’s North operate at their full capacity and potential at any time of the year,” he added.

Super Terminais Investment in Amazonas Expands Manaus Capacity and Cleaner Energy Use

The Manaus terminal received the largest share of the investment, around R$400 million. The biggest expenditure was R$120 million for three German-made electric cranes. The quay was also expanded and now has six berths, two more than before.

Energy is another focus. The company is building a R$30 million natural gas power plant dedicated to port operations in partnership with the Amazonas state government and gas distributor Cigás. Replacing diesel with natural gas is expected to cut CO₂ emissions by around 17,000 tonnes per year, according to the company.

The terminal currently employs between 600 and 700 people directly. From January through June 2026, it handled 138,035 TEUs, and the company aims to end the year above 300,000 TEUs.

Itacoatiara: Gateway for Grain Cargo

The remaining R$250 million went to Super Porto Verde, the company’s new terminal in Itacoatiara, 175 kilometers from Manaus. Through the project, Super Terminais is entering the agricultural commodities market, particularly grain and fertilizer handling.

The site will cover 300,000 square meters and include a 240-meter floating pier and three electric cranes. Together, they will be able to handle up to 2,100 tonnes per hour. The facility will be able to accommodate a Panamax vessel of up to 50,000 tonnes and six barges simultaneously, completing transshipment operations within 36 hours. The project is expected to create 130 direct and 250 indirect jobs.

The terminal is located near the confluence of the Madeira and Amazon rivers, along a route used to move agricultural production from Brazil’s Center-West to ports in the North.
